ABSTRACT A key aspect for understanding and explaining online communication is the micro level of communication practitioners’ social media usage and their general attitudes towards digital platforms. This paper investigates how public relations practitioner's personal and professional use of social media is related to their perceptions of social media. A quantitative methodology was applied to perform this research. A population of 2710 professionals from 43 European countries working on different hierarchical levels both in communication departments and agencies across Europe were surveyed as part of a larger transnational online survey. Results show that practitioners with a high level of usage of social media give more importance to social media channels, influence of social media on internal and external stakeholders and relevance of key gatekeepers and stakeholders along with a better self-estimation of competences. Issues about diverse levels of overestimation of social media use, application and importance in the professional arena are also debated.

ABSTRACT The practice of communication management and public relations in Europe has, according to theory, a reflective character. The key aspect of this reflective communication management is to view the organization from the perspective of the public sphere. Important aspects of reflective communication management are the extent to which communication recommendations are taken seriously by senior management, if and how communicative arguments and reputational considerations are factored into strategic decision making and planning in the organization, the involvement of communication professionals in corporate social responsibility, the use of research and equal positions for male and female practitioners. A secondary analysis of data from the European Communication Monitor 2008 and 2009, a cross national survey among European communication professionals, indicates that communication management in Europe indeed is developing in the direction of reflective communication management. Evidence is presented for the Netherlands and for different regions in Europe.

Quais são as principais tendências no desenvolvimento do exercício da gestão de comunicação em Portugal? Qual a sua importância nas organizações e quais as questões mais relevantes? Partindo da análise dos resultados do European Communication Monitor 2013, o maior estudo mundial acerca do futuro da Comunicação Estratégica, apresentaremos neste trabalho: (1) os primeiros resultados apurados para Portugal, com dados de caraterização individual; (2) uma análise comparativa entre os resultados de Portugal e os dados relativos a outros países europeus; e (3) uma tentativa de mapear, enquadrar e interpretar aprofundadamente os mesmos resultados, num esforço de reflexão e enriquecimento teórico

Es miembro activo del Grupo de Estudios Avanzados en Comunicación (GEAC) y participa en proyectos de investigación de este colectivo. (Routledge Publishers, USA), director del jurado de la International German Public Relations Award (Berlin) y director académico del Corporate Communication Cluster (Vienna). Asimismo, es director científico de la Academic Society for Corporate Leadership and Communication, una iniciativa de compañías globales que apoyan la transferencia de conocimientos en futuros asuntos estratégicos en comunicación corporativa. Ha recibido diversos premios por su trabajo académico y por sus campañas de comunicación y fue denominado el "investigador de relaciones públicas más innovador en la región germanohablante" en 2010. Es autor y editor de 25 libros y más de 130 artículos y capítulos en diversas lenguas sobre comunicación estratégica e innovación en comunicación.
